HOW CRYSTALS ARE FORMED

‘Stones work in just the same way as they grow
!’ This saying has taken on great significance in crystal healing. Goethe told us, ‘You should observe things as they are becoming’. Much can only really be understood if one examines the entire evolution, not just the end product. The same goes for crystals.

The stimulating effect of Chalcedony on the fluid balance of the body can be explained, for example, if one realizes that Chalcedony consists of aqueous silicic acid solutions, which trickle through cracks and clefts in the rock, and then collect in larger veins or hollow spaces. There, Chalcedony is formed through gradual ‘thickening’ and drying out of the silicic acid. Analogously, Chalcedony then mobilizes fluid in the tissues, which then collects in the lymph conduits and from there flows back into the blood – thus Chalcedony helps with water retention in the tissues. As it is a lymph system stimulant, Chalcedony has turned out to be an immune response fortifying crystal. Thus a crystal is a holistic mirror of its own formation – this applies to mineralogical qualities as well as to healing qualities.

There are three essential processes, or fundamental formation principles, in the creation of crystals: crystals and rocks can be created out of magma, the viscous molten rock inside the Earth; they can be formed through weathering and sedimentation; or they can be formed through metamorphosis, a ‘change of shape’ under the influence of pressure and heat. The latter process can ultimately lead to melting through great heat, which then creates magma again. In this way, the becoming and decaying of rocks and minerals can be broken down into three phases: the beginning (like the birth) of solid rock from magma (magmatic formation), continuous change through weathering and sedimentation (sedimentary formation), and the change shortly before melting (metamorphic formation). Thus rocks also experience a cycle with a beginning, a development, and an end, but one that takes dimensions of time running into millions of years. We are able, therefore, to study and experience the individual phases of crystals without any hurry!

Depending on the manner of their formation, crystals will stimulate certain stages of development in us: Magmatically formed crystals support starting phases in our lives; they help us to realize ideas and to overcome initial difficulties. Crystals formed through sedimentation help us, or projects we have begun, to develop further. Just as they themselves were formed through environmental influences, they can also help us handle conflicts within our environment and to learn from them. Metamorphic crystals enable us to end things we have begun, to close open cycles, and also to work through experiences of loss. Paying attention to the correct principles of formation within the field of analytical crystal healing means to pay attention to the present life situation and to choose the crystal that will optimally suit the present moment. In this manner, the psychological background to illnesses, difficulties and problems is easier to assess and to incorporate into the treatment.

Thanks to these four basic principles, the often quite complex healing effects of minerals, crystals and rocks can be easily identified, understood and applied. Basically, every principle gives an answer to a certain question.

Colour: Where and how does the crystal work?
Mineral substances: What does the crystal do?
Crystal structure: For whom will the crystal work?
Formation: When (in what situation) does the crystal work?

If all these principles are worked out properly in a consultation or treatment, it is certain that a particular crystal will be found for a certain person in a particular situation and with a particular illness or problem. Analytical crystal healing requires thorough research, but will be rewarded with a secure choice, one without guesswork. Detailed information on this is offered in the book, Crystal Power, Crystal Healing by Michael Gienger.

But the importance and significance of these four principles goes beyond their application in crystal healing; the connection of these four mineralogical qualities with certain effects on people also casts an interesting light on the energetic mechanisms of crystals.
